“Shiloh” And The Effects Of Feminism. Throughout The Decades,

â€Å"Shiloh† and the Effects of Feminism Throughout the decades, the feminist movement has been portrayed in numerous ways, from feminism being a liberating thing to feminism being deleterious towards men, or even being anti-government. Countless readers believe that the writer Bobbie Ann Mason writes solely about the changes that the females made to change their own world. Instead, Mason portrays the feminist movement in a much different light. In one of her many short stories, â€Å"Shiloh,† Mason shows the conflicting sides of the feminist movement and the end result of female liberation in many of these individual movements. â€Å"Shiloh† shows a married couple that has been forced into a new phase of their lives through the newfound disability†¦show more content†¦Norma Jean operates in the idea the feminism is defined as equality for both sexes without taking away opportunities for one. She operates in the idea that equality is like a ladder, moving up one rung does nothing to the other. Fe minism to her is finding happiness and individuality in herself. Leroy on the other hand takes Feminism as firstly a joke. We can see this when he asks Norma Jean in a very degrading tone if ending the marriage was â€Å"one of those women s lib things†(p. 371)? Leroy believes equality to be a seesaw, if one side is promoted the other must be degraded. He believes he was injured and because of this Norma Jean became better in mental and a physical sense. This is one of the sources of conflict, Norma Jean fights for herself and Leroy surrenders. The main character in â€Å"Shiloh† is also the feminist of the story. Norma Jean fights for her own happiness, and her individuality. Because of this she is one of the main subjects of conflict. Norma Jean and Leroy have been married for around twenty years, but the conflict comes when Leroy becomes injured and is no longer able to work. Norma Jean is seen originally as the feminine wife, but as the story progresses Norma Jean obtains more masculinity and the Leroy obtains more femininity. This shift is shown by multiple symbols and Leroy is â€Å"far from being a patriarch, he is subservient in relation to the other

Informative Speech Presentation Of Self - 1698 Words

Journal #2 – Lesson 18 – Presentation of Self in Everyday Life The ‘Presentation of Self’ reading lead to a lot of interesting discussion in class about how much of a person’s personality is actually their own and how much of it is just being made up as we go in order to fit in or to appear how we want others to see us. In many ways it is similar to the organizations as theater concepts, not surprisingly, but it also has a much larger emphasis on the actual thought processes of individuals as opposed to how a leader or organization member might act in order to achieve a goal. Presentation of self has a lot to do with creating a positive image of oneself and avoiding a negative one, tying in well to the previous lesson readings on organization citizenship and achieving desired images. Much like the sentiment of a few members of the class, I personally felt that it was more peculiar for someone to go so out of their way to appear in a certain light t o other people. After reviewing the additional readings, I didn’t view it so negatively because in many situations it does take a degree of theatrics to make an organization or relationship run smoothly. The impression management techniques are surprisingly prevalent in any organization once they are recognized and, while they seem shallow, it is often necessary to use such techniques to create an environment where goals are accomplished in order and with more efficiency. Importance Of The Millennium Development Goals Commerce Essay Example For Students

Importance Of The Millennium Development Goals Commerce Essay The Millennium Development Goals ( MDGs ) were agreed upon at the Millennium Summit in September 2000. More caputs of provinces ( 189 states ) and authoritiess came together than of all time before, a benchmark in itself. They pledged to work together amp ; to do a better universe for all by 2015. Unanimously subscribing A ; following a bundle, aimed at eliminating societal unfairnesss A ; inequalities ; utmost poorness, acquiring all childs to school, including misss ; gender equality, contending maternal mortality and kid mortality, change by reversaling the AIDS pandemic A ; guaranting sustainable development in an environmental sense. These perpetrating states agreed upon a new planetary partnership to guarantee these ends were met and set out a series of clip bound marks, with a deadline to be met by 2015. The MDGs are the most ambitious and most loosely supported development ends of all time to be established. The Millennium Development Goals are a set of eight ends, which pledge to emancipate work forces, adult females and kids from the dehumanizing conditions of utmost poorness and do the right to development a world for everyone. Listed below are the eight ends: Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poorness and hungriness Goal 2: Achieve universal primary instruction Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower adult females Goal 4: Reduce kid mortality Goal 5: Improve maternal wellness Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability Goal 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development The eight MDGs interrupt down into 21 quantifiable marks that are measured by 60 indexs. The MDGs are more than merely ends, they are seen to supply an overarching model for the development attempts, and benchmarks against which to judge success ( Health and the millenary development ends By World Health Organization ) . They set out a clear A ; precise docket as to what is required to assist gain the ends. Each end has been designed so that it is easy to understand, easy to implement and easy to mensurate in order to assist better the lives of the destitute people of the universe. The fact that MDGs are concrete, clip edge and intentionally designed to be mensurable ( which lends to a sense of answerability ) makes the MDGs experience more touchable people everyplace can instantly associate to them ; they speak to the immediate concerns and basic demands of everyone globally. Measurability is seen as an built-in feature of the MDGs, it is through this that the United Nations is a ble to measure how close it is to accomplishing one of the most ambitious understanding agreements in its history. Furthermore, this besides leads to authoritiess being held accountable for any abnormalities that may originate or for failure to implement successfully the eight MDGs within their state provinces. The MDGs reflect an unprecedented committedness by the universe s leaders to undertake the most basic signifiers of unfairness and inequality in our universe ; poorness, illiteracy and sick wellness. ( Health and the millenary development ends By World Health Organization ) . The importance of the MDGs can non be overstated. First, as set out in the Millennium Summit the purpose of the MDGs is to emancipate the billion plus people who presently live in utmost poorness. A common adage the universe over is the rich get richer whilst the hapless get poorer. However, with the MDGs it seems that the stigmatization on the richer states is easy being rendered disused. Second, cut downing the figure of people in poorness affairs for security and stableness. Research shows, for illustration, that a negative daze on income growing increases the chance of a civil war well ( United Nations Millennium Development Project 2005 ) ( Financial sector development and the Millennium Development Goals By Stijn Claessens, Erik Feijen ) . A premier illustration is that of the of all time declining state of affairs in Sudan s Darfur part, where the scarceness of sanitized H2O has seen some of the worst human-centered crisis of the twenty-first Century, with more than 200,000 D arfuris dead and 2 million holding fled their places. Third, economic wealth for the hapless creates new world-wide growing chances, by opening new consumer markets and commercial activity ; the 4 to 5 billion underserved people are estimated to stand for economic chance of $ 13 trillion ( Financial sector development and the Millennium Development Goals By Claessens. S, Feijen. Tocopherol ) . Arguably the biggest stumbling block for poorer states being unable to achieve the 7th MDG of guaranting environmental sustainability, is wholly down to the developed states imperativeness on duties, quotas A ; subsidies. All of which have made it highly hard for developing states to gain a life on their green goods. Hate Crimes Essay Decision The MDGs came about through the common understanding of the universe s leaders from developed states to developing states, each holding their ain function to play in taking to assist better the lives of one million millions of destitute people. They agreed upon eight ends, covering poorness, hungriness, wellness, kid mortality, adult females s rights, the environment and a planetary partnership on development. It is the primary duty of the poorer states to accomplish the first seven ends. They must make more to incorporate the MDGs into their policies, programs and budgets and interpret them into services for the hapless. There is a demand for more transparence and answerability so the advancement being made, or deficiency of, is clear for all to see amp ; so allows for the people to keep their authoritiess accountable for the promises they made. The MDGs are reciprocally binding, so the hapless states can non accomplish their first seven ends unless rich states fulfil their duties set out in end eight ; Develop a Global Partnership for Development. The developed states need to give more and to do certain what they are giving is used more efficaciously. They besides need to offer more debt alleviation and increase trade chances for hapless states by cut downing duties and subsidies to agriculture which deny husbandmans from hapless states their best opportunity of gaining a nice life. The importance of the Millennium Development Goals, is to implement a clear model from which the universe is able to cut down the societal unfairnesss and inequalities. It is to acquire the heads and oral cavities of the ordinary individual working so they continue to endeavor to accomplish the ends, manner beyond the outlooks of politicians. Their attainment, which is possible, lies in the custodies of every individual person.

Understand influences on dietary intake and nutritional health Essay Example

Understand influences on dietary intake and nutritional health Essay In this assignment I am going to explain possible influences on dietary intake, assess how influences on dietary intake may affect the nutritional health of individuals, then I will make realistic recommendations for minimising negative influences on individuals in a specific health and social care setting. Factors what influence what people eat include could be health factors which restrict dietary choices and nutritional intake could be underlying health conditions such as; lactose intolorence where dairy products within the diet is restricted, so the person will have to get calcium from other products like fish- and also use alternatives for milk like soya or rice milk. The person could have a food allergy like a nut allergy so this means they cant eat products that contain nuts or traces of nuts. Dietary habits can infucence could be ones like meal patterns- if they work shift patterns then this could have a big infuence on the times the person eats food because they wont have consistant meal times and be eating at all different times of the day. Snacking could be another factor because they may get bored waiting for food to cook and decide to snack this could lead to putting on weight, also food availablity- if they live in a area that is surrounded by takeaways; they will want to go and eat a takeaway rather than cook as it is easier. We will write a custom essay sample on Understand influences on dietary intake and nutritional health specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We will write a custom essay sample on Understand influences on dietary intake and nutritional health specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer We will write a custom essay sample on Understand influences on dietary intake and nutritional health specifically for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Hire Writer This fits into lifestyle; the person might not live near a gym and live near lots of unhealthy places, they could live near a deprived area and may not want to go for a run to get excersice; they may also go out a lot with friends (social eating and drinking) these all have an impact on a persons health. A persons occupation is a factor- if someone has a job that requires sitting at a desk, they arent getting much excersise and will gain weight, however- if their job is being a fitness trainer or a football coach, then they will get consistant excersice. The economical climate is a big factor as wages have stayed the same and the price of food and drinks has gone up, and also access to shops- the person may not have a car or the funds spare to get a bus, and if their corner shop raises its prices of food then the person will have to pay for them as they cant afford to get a bus or a taxi. They may not be able to afford healthy food and processed foods are often cheaper (like pizza and microwave meals) so it is easier. If a person has cultural beliefs- if they are a vegetarian or a vegan, this can affect their dietry choices as they will only want to eat non-meat products/non-animal produce, and often these products are more expensive. Education has a big impact on heath factors, as many people havent been educated on what nutrition labels mean so they dont understand what is on the label. If a person is lactose intolerent, then they wont be able to eat or drink products that have dairy products and the natural sugar (that is found in milk- it is added to foods), they wont be able to eat cream, cheese, yoghurt, biscuits and chocolate, and many breakfast cereals. This can affect their intake because lactose is often used for energy as well as it helps to absorb a number of minerals such as calcium and magnestium so deficiencies can start. This means that they wont be getting enough calcium (high in dairy products etc) or magnesium in their diet- this can lead to brittle bones, weak bones and teeth, calcium also aids the stopping of blood clots. If a person choses a lifestyle of living on their own; this can have a major impact on their nutritional health because if they live on their own; it is easier to have a takeaway or a microwave meal than to cook a portion of food for themselves, which requires washing up. It is faster to cook a meal in the microwave or order some food from the takeaway. It is also more expensive to put food in the fridge, which if the person isnt in a lot due to working then this could mean wasting money on food going off and not getting used when only one person is in. They wont have fruit and vegetables in as these will also go off and is it also a waste of money. This could lead to a high bmi, high cholestrol, and lead to the person being overweight. They will not be getting a balanced diet or following the eat well plate to stay healthy. There are several ways to reduce the negative influences that impact on a persons diet; if a person is lactose intolerant, they can still get calcium and magnesium as they can take lactose subsititute to help in digestion. If a person smokes, and they are smoking instead of eating, then this means that they arent having a balanced diet or getting all the nutrients they need- the person could cut down smoking and eat more meals when hungry instead of replacing meals for cigerettes. A person who lives on their own could also get healthier meals in that can be cooked in the oven for a short period of time- they could look online on what the traffic light labels mean and ensure if they are eating microwave meals then they are high in energy and low in salt and fat. If they work shift patterns, then they should ensure the food that they do eat (if it is late at night), that it is healthy and that they dont just go to the chipshop because it is easier, they should take soup or a pasta salad, not only will it give them lots of energy which is a slow release, it is healthier.
